Introduction

Teachers use Primary PE Passport which is a valuable online resource that provides a breadth of coverage and builds up PE skills sequentially within each year and across the school. Therefore, our PE curriculum is broad, balanced, engaging, and interactive. In addition, across school we have a PE specialist from our SPIN partnership who teaches multi-skills based on the current curriculum plus invasion games. He delivers high quality lessons for the children, but more importantly delivers valuable CPD for the teachers he has worked with throughout the past academic years. We ensure pupils enjoy their work by providing interesting activities supported by high quality resources. The school has a wide range of resources that support both the teachers and the children. Obvious links to healthy living and science are provided through all PE activities.

Spiritual Development in PE - pupils developing a variety of skills,

  • performing a sequence in gymnastics, which allows the pupils to express their feelings and emotions as well as be amazed by what their bodies can achieve. This happens within our PE department through a well-balanced PE curriculum where pupils are able to explore many activities and also take on many different roles within sport such as leader or coach. The pupils can feel the emotions and feelings that go with each role and activity.

Moral Development in PE - pupils have the opportunity to understand how PE can influence their healthy living and lifestyle.

  • highlights the advantages of health and lifestyle through team sports and health related fitness. Children are also able to understand the rules of activities and the reasons why they need to abide by them and understand what fair play is. Our children are challenged to increase their personal level of fitness and to understand the benefits of this. They are also taught about the importance of being healthy and active. In lessons, children are taught age appropriate rules, fairness and respect and are taught to abide by these rules. This is linked to the community we live in and the rules which each citizen must live by.

Social Development in PE – pupils have the opportunity to work as a team, as well as reflect on feelings of determination and enjoyment.

  • Children taking on the role of a coach or leader to develop their social skills in co-operation, communication, commitment, loyalty, and teamwork. We provide a varied and balanced curriculum, which gives pupils the opportunity to work together as a team and work on communication and leadership skills. Children are challenged to give 100% during PE lessons and there is a strong ethos of encouraging others during lessons.

Cultural Development in PE - pupils are given the opportunity to learn games and dances from different traditions, including their own, as well being able to appreciate the differences between male and female roles within sport.

  • Children are given the opportunity to learn many sports which originated from this country and others. Children are given many opportunities to compete against other schools in a variety of sports. This can often mean that our children are absorbing themselves into different cultures and learning respect for these cultures

Cultural capital is the accumulation of knowledge, skills, behaviours, and experiences that our pupils can draw upon to demonstrate their cultural awareness, knowledge, and competence. It represents giving children the opportunity to develop their curiosity and as stated above the children are provided with many opportunities to be curious and ask questions about their community and communities around them. Inclusion within our curriculum is paramount as we teach our children about diversity (not just disability) as an opportunity for learning about how everyone can become physically active and healthy.

Planning

Our planning is well thought out and builds up skills which enables us to deliver a broad, balanced, and high-quality curriculum. This leads to more children becoming genuinely physically literate with transferable skills. Children and staff members have access to the app and can have an overview of children’s prior learning and where they are on their PE journey.

Therefore, at the start and end each lesson we ask children retrieval questions, and then use the knowledge retrieved in those questions to connect to the new content we will be delivering in the next lesson or we may see the need to recap on a previous activity or skill based on what the children have retained.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out in 3 phases, namely EYFS, KS1 and KS2 with the focus in each phase as follows:

  • Formative (ongoing) assessment each lesson and focussing in on the key outcomes of that session.

Enrichment Activities

As a school we have provided and continue to off a range of after school clubs develop our children’s’ PE abilities such as:

  • Football
  • Badminton
  • Running

We have also outside professionals come in to promote healthy living e.g. Scoot Fit, Bikeability and Walk to School Week. Where possible, when travelling to local visits we encourage pupils to walk to locations of interest without the use of the minibuses.

Children in Upper KS2 take part in weekly swimming lessons, in addition to this we have also taken part in several sports competitions, including tennis, football, dodgeball, athletics and basketball.

Pupil Voice

Feedback from pupils demonstrates that they enjoy all aspects of the PE curriculum and activities we enter outside of school hours too. However, they do prefer the more competitive side of the sports curriculum.  Our children would also like to extend how much time they have for lessons.

Scoot Fit was extremely popular and well received by all pupils right from reception up to Year 6 so we will be investing in sets of scooters for year groups.
