NEW BUILD

Overview of Project

Following an assessment on the condition of school buildings across the UK, the Department of Education identified Mount Pleasant Primary School as one of the schools to be included in the first phase of the Priority Schools Building Programme.

The Education Funding Agency (EFA) appointed Kier Construction, a highly experienced contractor with vast amounts of experience with such projects, to carry out the work.

After many consultations, designs and planning, the old school building is finally being knocked down in two stages and will be re-built completely on the same site in the form of an amazing state of the art building that will modernise and completely transform the facilities through which the children will receive their education.

The new Mount Pleasant Primary School building which was designed by the school with support from the EFA and Kirklees Council, will accommodate 630 pupils aged 4-11, with an additional 39 nursery places. The new building will be located in a similar location to the existing building and the main entrance will be coming off Mount Street.

The building work is being carried out in two stages. The first involves half of the school being moved into temporary accommodation for 15 months whilst the new building is constructed over the area where the classrooms were moved from. Once the building work is complete, children will move into the new school clearing the temporary classrooms for demolition and clearance.

1 – Architects’ Design Plans

At ground level, the teaching block contains the Infant school – the Nursery, Reception and Infant classrooms, as well as the Studio and administrative accommodation. Being at ground level is important for these groups, and direct access to the outside is possible from all classrooms. The Junior school is located on the floor above, along with the LRC which is sited in the centre of the first floor plan and thus is located in the middle of the school.

The external focal point, or face, of the new school is at the corner facing Mount Street. This is to be made from locally-sourced sandstone and is expected to incorporate the school signage. The other building materials have then been chosen to complement the stone:

  • The ground floor of the main teaching block, and the western stair block at both levels is faced with a neutral, warmish-grey brick.
  • The upper floor of the teaching block is faced with a warm cream coloured render.
  • The hall block to the west of the site is conceived as a simple brick cuboid, and is clad in a dark brick which provides a termination to the composition of the building at the opposite end to the stone.

The window system incorporates a number of blanked (non-vision) opening natural ventilators, and colour will be applied to these – a warm orange on the ground floor which complements the grey brick, and a bright green on the first floor which similarly works with the warm render. The precise colours may be the subject of further discussions.

2 – Public Consultation Event

With the support of the Council, EFA and Kier, the school organised a number of very successful public consultation events at Mount Pleasant, where detailed plans were shared with staff, parents, neighbours, local business as well as other stakeholders.

Below are some pictures taken at the consultation events in which people were able to ask questions to the architects as well as make suggestions...

(Parents meet the architects and designers at the Consultation Event on Tues 8 Sept 2015)

3 – Staff Packing for Phase 1

At the end of the summer term, the school closed three days early. These days were used by staff to pack Years 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 to have all resources ready to be moved into the temporary classrooms once they were ready.

Below are some pictures of our very excited staff preparing to move from the old building...
