Complete re-build of Mount Pleasant

Changes on the way to Mount Pleasant Primary School in Lockwood

Huddersfield’s biggest primary school is to be razed and re-built.

And it means 600 children and 117 staff at Mount Pleasant Primary School will be based in a temporary school during the works.

Kirklees Council has received funding from the Education Funding Authority for the re-building of the Lockwood.

They will be based in a two-storey modular school at Rashcliffe Park, on Rashcliffe Hill Road for 18 months, on land that is currently recreation land.

Details of the plans are revealed in a planning application now submitted to the authority.

The existing school is set to close at the end of the 2014/15 academic year and be demolished and replaced by a new school that will be ready for the start of the 2016/17 academic year.

A report says: “For 2015/16 Kirklees Council plan to move the school to a temporary location approximately 300 metres north of the existing school. The move would take place in May/June 2015 and the school would be there for 15-18 months.”

In March and June Kirklees Cabinet discussed plans for the re-build in private.

Kirklees is putting £800,000 from contingencies to cover initial set-up and decant costs, with a further £2m needed in the coming years.

A brief update on the agenda items highlighted there was some concern on the council’s part, and a source has indicated concern about the design specification of the new school. Plans for it have not yet been submitted.

In the temporary school, the nursery, reception and infant school children will be based on one floor of the modular building, with the junior children on the second floor.

A planning application for the modular building shows that several existing trees will be cut down and minor highways work is needed. A car park of 25 spaces for 117 members of full and part time staff is also incorporated into the design.

The current recreational ground will be incorporated into the school grounds and fenced off.

Once the children move out of the modular school, the land will be returned to its current use.

Work will take place to re-build the current school, on Mount Road, Lockwood.

Plans for the temporary school will be decided by the new Strategic Planning Committee, after the public consultation closes on December 16.
